Infection Prevention and Control

COMBAT-AMR will improve Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) by establishing best practice policies, procedures and systems for monitoring selected healthcare associated infections through training and mentoring.

This theme will be implemented across all four program countries with the aim to:

Establish policies and procedures to guide IPC activities in healthcare facilities.

Activities will include assessment of existing IPC practices, and any currently available policies procedures and guidelines being used. In country counterparts will work with the team to prioritise and address gaps whilst ensuring resources fit the local context.

Develop a system for monitoring of selected healthcare associated infections.

The project will explore the feasibility of monitoring key healthcare associated infections (HAIs) at each site and identify key focus areas. Learnings from established surveillance programs will be used to guide audit strategies, definitions and data collection methods, including the potential use of WHONET software to detect possible hospital outbreaks based on laboratory detection of high risk pathogens.

Establish programs to improve IPC in healthcare facilities.

A training and mentorship program will be designed for key in-country professionals to implement activities to improve IPC at the institutional level and develop their capacity to train other staff to support implementation and sustainability. This project will also explore and support establishment of sustainable approaches to the production and distribution of alcohol-based hand rub to support hand hygiene initiatives.

Our Work

COMBAT-AMR will deliver a program of work during 2019 – 2022 at major national sites, including referral hospitals and laboratories, across four key themes.

Infection Prevention and Control

COMBAT-AMR will improve Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) by establishing best practice policies, procedures and systems for monitoring selected healthcare associated infections through training and mentoring.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

COMBAT-AMR will provide training and mentorship to build capacity for improved measurement and ongoing monitoring of the appropriateness of antibiotic use, as well as the capability to manage antimicrobial stewardship and respond to emerging issues.

Laboratory Capacity and Surveillance

COMBAT-AMR will improve capacity for laboratory surveillance of AMR through training and mentoring activities to detect AMR in an accurate and timely manner, to undertake surveillance of WHO AMR priority pathogens, and to establish efficient referral pathways for AMR pathogens.

Animal Health‍

COMBAT-AMR will help mitigate the threat of antimicrobial resistance arising using a One Health approach, by assessing current practices, policies, procedures and systems for monitoring and controlling antimicrobial resistance in animal health and developing approaches to address needs through training and mentoring.
